Spirituality is that which gives meaning to our lives. For Christians, spirituality encompasses all that deepens our relationship with God in Jesus Christ, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Spirituality says who God is for us and who we are for God. As Christians, we believe in God who is the creator of all, and the One who has called a people into Covenant: the Covenant of the Law of Moses, and the New Covenant created in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Spirituality engages us in a personal relationship with God in the power of the Holy Spirit, and with those who are God’s people, the Church.
Spirituality shapes the cycles and rhythms of our lives. What we believe will shape our daily, weekly and yearly lives in cycles of fasting and feasting, and observances. Christians are called to pray daily, especially in the morning and evening. We gather on Sunday, the first day of the week, to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent and Easter, Advent and Christmas, and Saints days shape our yearly journey.
Spirituality shapes our relationship with others and the world around us. We believe that human beings are created in the image of God, and therefore the human individual is of value in the eyes of God, and of each other. The Gospel of Jesus Christ over and over again speaks of the love of neighbor as the highest good – the equal to loving God. Our Baptismal Covenant calls us “to strive for justice and peace among all people and to respect the dignity of every human being.” (Book of Common Prayer, p. 305)
Our relationship with God grows in our life of prayer, worship, and service to others.
